Blighted Areas Are Revived as Crime Rate Falls in Cities -- With the historic drop in violent crime beginning to take hold in even the most blighted urban areas, cities across the country are being transformed, as neighborhoods that had become frightening wastelands are showing glimmers of renaissance.

Communities 'Fighting Back' to quash crime -- In an inner-city neighborhood of San Antonio, TX, citizens gathered their own evidence about a local store that sold alcohol to underage youths and dealt illegal drugs. The neighbors tallied the store's liquor sales to minors and successfully petitioned the San Antonio Alcohol and Beverage Commission to shut down the store. The area's crime has dropped 33%. Residents in a public housing project lobbied the city for speed bumps on their roads. They figured if gunmen couldn't peel away from the scene, they'd stop. The neighborhood hasn't had another shooting. Support ed by community agencies and University of Texas researchers, Fighting Back is a community effort to reduce crime. The strength to combat social and health problems lies within people and their communities. It's imperative to involve community members.
